Aviation-related impacts on UFP near airports

Aircraft engine exhaust emissions are a significant source of ultra fine particles (UFP; aerodynamic diameter <100 nm) and can cause several-fold increases in ground-level particle number concentrations (PNC) over large areas downwind of airports, as a recent study in the United States shows. Exposure to UFP is of particular concern because it is associated with inflammation biomarkers, oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease.
